UpLead vs. ZoomInfo

UpLead is an affordable ZoomInfo alternative.
Here’s why you should consider switching…

As a ZoomInfo competitor and alternative, UpLead serves many of the same purposes as the popular B2B contact data vendor. Founded in 2000, ZoomInfo claims to offer “the world’s most comprehensive B2B database.” For businesses on the hunt for new, qualified B2B marketing and sales leads, words like “comprehensive” are undoubtedly attractive. But is ZoomInfo the best choice, or would B2B marketers do well to consider a ZoomInfo alternative like UpLead. In this article, we will explore the commonalities and differences between these two platforms, with the goal of giving readers some insight on which data provider might serve their needs better.

While no company can offer a truly “comprehensive” B2B database, that fact is no slight against ZoomInfo or the company’s impressive contact database. Indeed, ZoomInfo’s platform currently consists of 59 million business email addresses and 37 million direct dials in the United States. Expand the scope globally, and those figures increase to 113 million business emails and 59 million direct dials. Many of those contacts are also high-level: the ZoomInfo database includes 13 million C-level contacts and 21 million direct dials for company decision makers. These numbers alone make ZoomInfo an attractive platform for B2B marketing. ZoomInfo also claims to add 204,000 contacts to its database every day, which means these numbers should, theoretically, be increasing all the time.

At UpLead, our database does not include as much contact data as ZoomInfo’s. Still, our database is no slouch. It includes over 46 million contacts spanning more than 200 countries worldwide, and many industries/market segments to boot. Our users can search our database and build targeted prospect lists based by using more than 50 criteria, including job title, industry, management level, business type, and more.

The Points of Comparison

As with our comparison article between UpLead and DiscoverOrg, we will walk through the pros and cons of UpLead and ZoomInfo by comparing the two platforms across five categories. These points of comparison include database size, pricing, contract obligations, update frequency, and special features. Learning about these categories will give you the most crucial details about these two B2B data vendors and how they are different. From there, you will be able to choose the B2B contact database that suits your business’s needs.

Database Size

While no company can offer a truly “comprehensive” B2B database, that fact is no slight against ZoomInfo or the company’s impressive contact database.
Indeed, ZoomInfo’s platform currently consists of 59 million business email addresses and 37 million direct dials in the United States. Expand the scope globally, and those figures increase to 113 million business emails and 59 million direct dials.

The Verdict: ZoomInfo Wins!

ZoomInfo beats UpLead regarding database size, but a higher quality database that is 46 million contacts strong will still provide a notable boost to the average B2B marketing company.

Pricing

One of the more frustrating facets of shopping around for a B2B data provider is the lack of transparency about pricing. It’s difficult to compare prices of different services when companies are not forthright about how much they charge for access to their contact databases.

ZoomInfo is one such example. The company is not transparent about its pricing on its website. Instead, the ZoomInfo pricing page includes bulleted lists of the platform’s features and integrations, followed by a field where the user can enter his or her business email address to “Get Pricing.”

Certainly, pricing for any B2B database will depend on the specific needs of the customer. Some businesses use these services to identify thousands of leads a month, while others only need a few hundred new leads per quarter. These two companies would pay different prices to use the same B2B data platform.

However, it is still reasonable for a customer to expect some transparency with pricing when researching data providers online. At UpLead, we provide a detailed rundown of our pricing structure, which includes three different fixed plans (Basic, Plus, and Professional), as well as one customizable plan option meant for larger businesses (Enterprise). Our plans start at just $79 per month. More expensive plans are still affordable (our Professional package is $349 a month) and include extra benefits like more credits (each credit is good for one contact) and access for unlimited users.

In comparison, ZoomInfo cost starts at $5,000 per year for the most basic plan.

It is also worth noting that both UpLead and ZoomInfo offer free trial versions. At UpLead, our free trial is a basic seven-day test version that lets users experience our platform, explore the interface, and get a sense of the depth and quality of our database.
ZoomInfo also has a basic free trial, but it also has a free edition that comes with strings attached. With the free “Community Edition,” users get full, unlimited search access to the ZoomInfo data. Every month, the trial allows users to download 10 of those contacts. In return, ZoomInfo asks that trial users install an Outlook plugin that “automatically shares [their] business contacts with ZoomInfo.” Furthermore, not only does ZoomInfo get email addresses, but it also pulls data from email headers and signature blocks. Scraping this data is one of the ways that ZoomInfo builds, fleshes out, or updates its database.
First, this exchange isn’t exactly equal. For just ten contacts a month, ZoomInfo can get hundreds or even thousands of email addresses from each Community user. Secondly, many people take this method of compiling information as a violation of privacy. It’s because of data scraping users email signatures without their full acknowledgement that B2B data providers have a bad reputation among some marketing professionals. UpLead compiles none of its data using these types of strategies.

The Verdict: UpLead Wins!

Regarding affordability, transparency, and all-around ethics, UpLead beats ZoomInfo in the pricing department.

Contract Obligations

ZoomInfo’s Community Edition gives users “free, ongoing access” to the ZoomInfo database for as long as they keep the email plugin installed. Outside of the free trial, though, ZoomInfo locks customers into contracts that last a year.

At UpLead, our model is a lot more flexible. Each package we sell is billed per month and provides access to a certain number of contact credits. Those credits rollover at the end of the month, so if you don’t cash them all in over the course of 30 days, that’s not a problem. Users can then replenish their credits at any time or opt to stop using the UpLead service. You are not obligated to continue using or paying for our platform under any contract. You do however need to have an active paid subscription in order to access our platform and use your credits.

The Verdict: UpLead Wins!

Contracts are a hassle at best and a major financial problem at worst. With no contract obligations whatsoever, UpLead provides greater flexibility that businesses—especially smaller ventures on tighter budgets—appreciate.

Special Features

In terms of special features, ZoomInfo and UpLead have a lot of similarities. For instance, we both offer databases with lots of capabilities for effective lead targeting. We also each offer a data enhancement tool, where users can upload their contact lists into our systems and use our databases to fill in the gaps in theirs.

For ZoomInfo, the big selling point might be the platform’s plugins. ZoomInfo plugins for platforms like Salesforce and Marketo make it easier to put new B2B intelligence to use, while the ReachOut Chrome Extension can pull emails and direct dial information directly from LinkedIn accounts.

For UpLead, our big selling point—beyond our real-time email verification feature—is our technology tracking facet. You can use our platform to target customers based on the specific technologies they are using. We have built-in CRM integrations making it easy for users to export their leads directly to many popular platforms such as: Salesforce, Hubspot, Pipedrive, Reply, Woodpecker, Mailshake, Nimble, Copper, Zoho, Outreach, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Lemlist and Insightly. We also have our own list of integrations, just like ZoomInfo has theirs.

The Verdict: UpLead Wins!

As with DiscoverOrg, the answer here depends on what you are looking for from your B2B data vendor.

Final Verdict: UpLead Beats ZoomInfo!

Regarding sheer data quantity, it’s tough to compete with ZoomInfo. However, considering the high ZoomInfo cost, the prospect of committing to an annual contract, and the company’s questionable strategies for scraping data, UpLead might be more than just a ZoomInfo competitor. Indeed, for many businesses, our platform is more affordable, more flexible, and all-around a smarter choice.
